In May 1942, Jupp’s good friend Gustav wrote from Canberra. Inquiring after the general situation in Camp 2, Tatura, where Jupp was lodging in Hut 6 at that time, he wrote:
“How is you canteen, are you able to buy fruit and are you satisfied with your food, as Vegetarians? Don’t eat too much white sugar, he is a great calcium robber.”
And indeed, he was right. Calcium is essential for a healthy life as it used by the body in all vital functions and found in all body cells. The regular intake of sugar in the refine form is the greatest robber of calcium. Read more here, for example:
Then again, there are good uses for white sugar, for example when treating deep wounds. Packing deep wounds with white sugar will make for cleaner wounds, faster healing and less scar tissue. Here you will find how it works:
Both links are just examples, there is ample material about either topic to be had online.
Again it strikes me that Jupp and his contemporaries had a general knowledge, or maybe common sense, that we have largely lost or delegated to specialists. It behooves us to reactivate this knowledge, IMHO. There might be times ahead when the ever present internet specialist will not be available at our fingertips 24/7.
